Uchiwa Lounge Chair

The Uchiwa Lounge Chair, designed by Doshi Levien for HAY, translates the form of a traditional Japanese hand fan into a contemporary lounge chair. The design is characterized by a wide, open seat shell that creates an inviting and enveloping seating position.
The chair consists of a generously upholstered shell in which the seat and back are shaped as one continuous volume. The soft upholstery enhances comfort and gives the object a tactile quality. This shell rests on a wooden base that provides stability and offers a warm visual counterbalance to the generous seating volume.
Within contemporary design, the Uchiwa Lounge Chair combines influences from different design traditions. The chair brings together the Scandinavian focus on material and simplicity with a subtle reference to Japanese formal culture.
Thanks to its generous form and calm construction, the chair functions as a distinct seating object within living spaces, lounges, and reception areas where comfort and form are brought into balance.
