Modernism
c. 1910 – 1965
Form follows function.
Design driven by functionality, rationality, and a clear formal language.
Modernism developed in the early 20th century and was strongly influenced by industrialization and new production techniques. Functionality, rationality, and simplicity were central, marking a clear break from traditional styles.
Iconic figures such as Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Alvar Aalto translated these principles into furniture that was architectural and innovative. Modernist design laid the foundation for much of today’s furniture design and remains a key reference point in design history.
