The Stool 64, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935 for Artek, embodies a design philosophy in which functionality, material innovation and human scale play a central role. Aalto approached furniture design from an architectural perspective: objects should not only be useful but should also contribute to a harmonious spatial environment.

The bar stool is based on a clear four-legged structure with a round seat, where the construction remains visible and honest. Rather than relying on ornament, Aalto allows the material itself to define the character of the object. The bent birch wood and carefully balanced proportions create a subtle presence that integrates effortlessly into a wide variety of interiors.

The design builds upon Aalto’s research into bent wood and his characteristic structural solutions, where strength and visual lightness are combined. The elevated seat makes the stool suitable for use at bars, high tables or informal meeting areas in both residential and public settings.

Within Scandinavian Modern, the Stool 64 represents a democratic approach to design: reproducible, durable and intended for everyday use without losing its aesthetic value. Through its simple geometry and refined detailing, the stool functions both as a standalone object and in repetition around a table or bar. The strength of the design lies in its natural clarity: restrained, thoughtful and enduringly relevant within an architectural context.
