The Stool 64, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935 for Artek, is a characteristic example of Scandinavian modernism in which functionality, material innovation and human scale are central. The design builds upon Aalto’s research into bent birch wood and his patented L-leg construction, in which solid wood is steam-bent to create a strong and elegant connection between the leg and the seat.

The bar stool translates this constructive logic into an elevated seating form, featuring a clear four-legged structure and a round seat. The design is free of unnecessary details and reflects Aalto’s pursuit of an organic modernity that combines warmth with rationality. The proportions are carefully calibrated for use in both residential and public environments.

Within Scandinavian Modern, the Stool 64 represents a democratic vision of design: reproducible, durable and aesthetically restrained. The simplicity of form and material makes the model timeless and architecturally versatile, while the constructive solution remains visible as an essential part of its aesthetic expression.
